How To Make An Ammo Can Stove

Did you know that there are more than 100 uses for military ammo cans, aside from the obvious use which is storing ammunition. People, especially preppers, love them because they are extremely durable, cheap, airtight, watertight, and are easy to come by. However while you’re rattling off the different ways you can use one in your life, there is one use that many never even thought about or heard of. This may be the first time you’re hearing about it too.

And that use is to convert your ammo can into a stove. Why would you want to? Well, when the SHTF, and you want to eat, having this around will make cooking dinner very easy. Plus it’s easy to carry, setup, and use.

Here’s what it looks like when it’s just a regular ammo can…

So let’s get started in this cool DIY project.

How To Make An Ammo Can Stove

Step 1: Ammo Can Packed Up

In this example the ammo-can in its travel mode is carrying a 1 liter Billy-Can (inside the Billy-Can are tea bags, sugar, fire making kit, Montreal steak spice, a can of milk) two cups, the skewers and hotdogs.

Step 2: Constructing Your Ammo Can Stove

constructing your ammo can stove

Start by drilled ten 1/2″ diameter holes along both sides 1″ above the bottom of the can and a 2″ diameter hole in one end (to feed in the fuel) and ten 3/16″ diameter holes along the top to put the skewers through (they would form the grill).

Use six stainless steel skewers cut to 1″ longer than the width of the ammo-can and with the ten holes across the top you are able to make the grill as wide or as narrow as you need. Also they can be used as skewers to cook a shish-kabob if so desired.

Step 3: Getting The Fire Going In Your Ammo Can Stove

Because of the shape of the ammo-can (the heat is always redirected inward and up) and the small diameter of the fuel (By rule of thumb you shouldn’t use anything bigger than the diameter of your thumb – small branches, dead twigs, and a little birch bark should be all you need to get it started), the fire burns hot, fast and clean and there is very little ash left. After the fire is finished, the ammo-can cools down very quickly. So cleaning up and packing up is fast.

Step 4: Time To Cook In Your Ammo Can Stove

The ammo can stove can boil 1 liter of water in 3 to 5 minutes depending on the type of fuel that is used. Also to keep the ammo can stove from scorching the earth, perch it up on a couple of flat rocks. And if the ground is wet or covered with snow, you don’t need the rocks and can just put it on the ground in that case since the fire is contained in the can. And although this goes without saying, I’ll say it anyway… Do not use this to cook indoors.

What if you don’t happen to have an ammo can? How about how to make a rock stove? ( Don’t have to carry that one around with you, and you don’t have to modify it with a bunch of tools that you probably do not have!) How about how to start a fire with water? How about how to catch food with a string and a branch? How about how to make a string? How about you don’t know how to do it….until you have to do it! Good grief people….survival is to prepare and use common sense to initiate if the situation presents itself! Don’t live in fear, but be aware and prepare!

They have shared things like what you are saying before. And this is something awesome to share, you won’t need to tools to build it when the SHTF because you should have already done something like this before the SHTF. It’s a great little idea to use. Took me less than 30 minutes to make one of these. And ammo can’s are easy to come by. I have many of them myself.
